How To: Enable Android 4.1 Jelly Bean’s Tablet UI On The Nexus 7

The Nexus 7′s 1280 by 800 pixel display has more than enough pixel real estate to draw Android’s tablet UI, but because the screen only measures 7″, the Nexus 7′s interface is treated as if it were a very large phone. Luckily there is an easy patch that can enable the wide screen tablet UI on the Nexus 7. There have been automated methods for editing the LCD density, but since the Nexus 7 is using a new version of Android, we will follow the method laid out by SladeNoctis of the XDA-Developers forum.
Keep in mind that this is a manual tweak, which will require changing strings within your tablet’ssystem files. While these settings should enable the tablet UI, if you made a mistake it could corrupt your display settings. iJailbreak is not responsible for any damage you do to your electronics.
SladeNoctis’ guide suggests using a file explorer, such as Root Explorer or ES File Manager, although you can also make the changes from your computer through a SSH client. This tweak will require rootaccess on your tablet as well as a text editor.
1. Go to “/system” and look for the file “build.prop”. It may be a good idea to save a backup of the unchanged file in another location.
2. Open “build.prop” with a text editor.
3. Find the string that contains the words “lcd_density”.
4. The default setting for this string should be 213. If you want tablet mode, set the density to 170 or less. When you set the number lower, Android will treat your screen as a larger but less dense display.
5. Save the changes to the edited file and then reboot your device. It should launch with the TabletUI.
Note that you can also use the reverse of this method to increase the size of objects on your device’s display. Just make the LCD Density setting higher than 213.
