Firefox OS: Hands on video

Ever since Android came up we have been waiting for a competitor; an open source OS, and it seems like one has finally emerged. Mozilla have come up with their Firefox OS, and the most interesting thing is that they have released a build that you can test on your PC or Mac.

This certainly got everyone excited and iDB decided to give the Firefox OS a little test. Although a lot of the features won’t work or a PC or Mac as it requires specific hardware but it still gives us a hands on feel of the new OS. Starting off with the home screen the Icons are mostly circular and it gives you the impression of being something of a mix of the iOS and the Android OS. It looks very visual, and what we really liked was the home screen that lets you unlock to the home screen or you can go directly to your camera or other applications. The interface is quite colorful, it looks fresh and you have the native Firefox red, yellow, and green icons on the top left corner. It’s even got the Apples wiggly icon mode where you can re arrange your icons to suit your needs, overall it does give an impression of being a Me Too OS but it still too soon say something like that.
Overall it looks very promising, but that will be decided later on when a Firefox phone is launched. For the time being give us your thoughts on the new Firefox OS and whether or not you are excited to get your hands on it. You can also read about it more in our post.

Firefox OS: Try it on your desktop now !

Mozilla will be soon competing in the OS market as they are going to release the Firefox OS next year. Alcatel and ZTE will be going to be releasing some of the very first Firefox OS on their devices and will be targeting it to the middle income group. Codenamed Boot to Gecko, the OS operates on HTML 5 and they are all set to take some market share from the iOS and the Android. The core concept behind using HTML 5 is to use open web standards and allow web apps to make full use of the device’s hardware for better performing applications.

The Mozilla team is very enthusiastic about their OS and they claim that’s it will be an operating with everything in it and that it will be simply amazing. Users will have features such as contact dialing, messaging, web browsing, gaming, video viewing and transfer of media through the popular bumping technique and a lot more as developers start getting involved with HTML 5. However, until the OS is actually deployed on a device we cannot be sure how it will function, but till that time comes Mozilla has made builds that can be tested on PC, Linux and Mac.

Although these builds are made for developers to test their apps normal users can install it just to try it out. However, the process is quite lengthy and is not that simple like installing a fresh copy of windows or anything like that. If you are a developer and are keen on wanting to develop apps for the Firefox OS then you can go ahead and heck out this detailed tutorial on how to set up the Firefox OS on your desktop from here. Feel free to comment!

First images of FireFox OS are finally here

With the iOS and the Android taking up much of the user base, Firefox has jumped in the OS bandwagon as well. With their new HTML 5 based OS they are going to target the middle to lower income group in new emerging markets and they have already got some good support from carriers.

Looking at some of these images, one can surely tell that it looks like a mash up of the iOS with Android.
The lockscreen incorporates notifications, and you can go directly to your camera or your home page from the lockscreen. This is a definite bonus as it will reduce the time taken to take out your phone and snap a picture. The homescreen is nice on your eyes, and the icons are quite big which makes for quite a nice overall look. I really like the way the contacts are displayed, when you open up a contact to view them the contact picture is displayed similar to the way the Facebook cover photo is displayed. The keyboard looks as if it’s been taken out of the iOS with a bit of a modification on the keys.
However, since it’s based on HTML 5 it can’t really compare with the android OS or the iOS. Even Apps won’t be looking so pretty, since HTML 5 will take some time to kick in. Moreover, Firefox claims that its OS will be much lighter than Android, but on the other hand Firefox has also said that as chips become more powerful in the future, the performance issues will eventually go away.
As far as implementing the OS goes; Vivo, a carrier is expected to launch the first device to run the new mobile operating system early next year in Brazil. Moreover Chinese companies like ZTE and TCL will also be making Firefox devices.
Let’s see what happens, we can’t say much until we get our hands dirty on the Firefox OS but until then, we will be waiting for it.
